About
Dr. Heather D. S. Walden is an Associate Professor of Parasitology at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Her research and clinical work focus on parasitic disease, diagnostic parasitology, and classical parasite biology, with a particular emphasis on zoonotic and emerging parasite species. She manages a diagnostic and discovery parasitology service at the University of Florida, providing expertise to small and large animal clinics, as well as zoological and conservation organizations. Her work has spanned international borders, including collaborations in Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Zambia, and Senegal, focusing on host preference, transmission, and the geographic range of invasive species such as the rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis. In addition to her research, Dr. Walden is a dedicated educator who teaches parasitology to veterinary students throughout their curriculum and mentors graduate and undergraduate researchers. She is highly active in the veterinary community, having served as the President of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) and as the President of the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC). She has been recognized for her teaching excellence, including receiving the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher of the Year award.
