Dr. Mohamed Faizal Abdul-Careem is a Professor of Virology at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his BVSc (Hons) from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, followed by an MVM from the University of Glasgow and a PhD in Viral Immunology from the University of Guelph. Prior to his faculty appointment, he completed a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Fellowship at McMaster University, focusing on innate immune responses to mucosal viral infections. Dr. Abdul-Careem is a diplomate of both the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (ACPV) and the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM). His research program is dedicated to understanding host-pathogen interactions in poultry, with a specific emphasis on avian immunology and the innate immune response to respiratory viral infections such as infectious bronchitis coronavirus and Marek’s disease. He is a recognized expert in the field, having authored specialized veterinary texts including 'Hatchery Vaccination' and 'Marek’s Disease'.
