Dr. Doug Carithers is a distinguished veterinarian and the Director of Applied Research and Publications at Boehringer Ingelheim. A graduate of the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he transitioned from private mixed-animal practice in 1993 to a prominent career in industry research and scientific communication. Throughout his career, he has authored or co-authored over 40 scientific papers and contributed as an editor for the 9th and 10th editions of the Merck Veterinary Manual and the Merck Pet Manual. He is also recognized for co-authoring a best-selling companion animal parasitology atlas. Dr. Carithers is a highly active leader in the veterinary community, having served as the president of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) and as a vice president of the American Heartworm Society (AHS). He has conducted every AHS Heartworm Incidence Survey since 2001 and is a frequent lecturer at national and international veterinary conferences, having provided over 950 hours of continuing education. His work focuses on advancing the understanding of parasitology to improve both animal and human health.
